Vice President Dick Cheney was hospitalized early this morning after suffering from shortness of breath, but doctors ruled out any recurrence of his long-standing heart problems, according to a statement issued by his office.

The statement said that Mr. Cheney was taken to George Washington Hospital in Washington about 3 am. After performing an electrocardiogram, or EKG test, doctors found no change in the functioning of Mr. Cheney's heart. "The doctors determined that Mr. Cheney was retaining fluid as a result of an anti-inflammatory he had been taking for a foot problem," the statement said. The doctors put Mr. Cheney on a diuretic - a drug designed to reduce his fluid levels - and he left hospital around 7 am.
